Teaching at Verulam
Verulam is a high achieving boys’ school with a mixed Sixth Form, which forms part of the highly successful BeauSandVer consortium.
Verulam became an academy in August 2011. Verulam School is a member of the Alban Academies Trust, together with Sandringham and Ridgeway schools. We work together to share best practice, deliver joint training, promote the highest of expectations and raise achievement for all students. Our motto is ‘Educational Excellence for Everyone’. The trust offers significant opportunities for career development for staff at all levels within our organisation.
We are specialists in boys’ education and design our curriculum and teaching to help pupils to fulfil their potential. We have developed a successful approach to teaching known as the Verulam Lesson to aid staff and give boys much needed consistency. We also place emphasis on ensuring that all pupils are equipped for learning, have good attendance and exemplary behaviour.
We also recognise that boys succeed when they engage in the sports, social or other extra-curricular activities provided by the school. The 7 year journey enables pupils to become confident and articulate young men and women who succeed in higher education, employment and their personal lives. From their first days at Verulam, we encourage pupils to become enthusiastic learners who aim for excellence, develop their character and show respect for all.
The school has good GCSE and A Level results. Sixth Form students move onto prestigious university places, including Oxbridge and high level apprenticeships.
We are a founder member of the Alban Teaching Schools Alliance and are committed to the Schools’ Direct training programme. We regularly have 2-3 trainees through this programme. We also have links with local universities and host PGCE students.
As part of the BeauSandVer post-16 consortium we work closely with Beaumont and Sandringham schools to ensure that our post 16 teaching and curriculum is outstanding. Staff from the three schools work together to develop curricula and best practice.
The school is committed to promoting and encouraging teachers continued professional development through a range of internal and external opportunities including the Alban Teaching School Alliance.
In October 2018, we received an Ofsted inspection which rated the overall effectiveness of Verulam School as Good and that each of the five sub categories was similarly judged as Good.
Informal visits to the school are strongly encouraged. Please contact Mr Riley, Head’s PA on 01727 754102 or email admin FAO Mr Riley admin@aat.school
