The Verulam Lesson

Opening phase of the lesson:

  • Teacher at the door welcomes students and checks uniform
  • Students enter insists on calm and sitting in seating plan
  • Students get ready pencil case, planner and work on the desk
  • Lesson starts on time when the lesson bell sounds, door closed
  • Late students knock on the door and wait to gain entry.
  • Register completed in silence
  • Learning objectives explained check they understand are challenged
  • Starter activity takes place students are doing/ thinking/ being questioned.

Main body of the lesson:

  • Teacher provides the input needed for students to be able to understand the key learning in the lesson.
  • Students do independent learning, which includes clear and appropriate A4L. Effective and varied questioning to be used in all lessons, to make students think.
  • Homework given to students and written in planners, before the plenary.

Close of lesson:

  • Plenary – must show what students have learnt in this lesson
  • Students pack away – stand behind their desks
  • The teacher checks that the classroom is tidy
  • The teacher checks uniform is correct
  • Teacher stands by the door – dismisses the class by row/section

Teacher stands by the door and dismisses the class a row/section/group at a time.
