STEM update

Verulam staff and students have been enjoying a range of extra curricular STEM activities over the last few weeks.

Engineering Master Classes

Four of our Year 9 students were chosen to represent Verulam at the 2019 Royal Institution of Engineering series of Masterclasses.  Oscar Afonso-Trindade, Faizan Qutby, Sean Tidd and Jonathan Wilding all attended their first session on Saturday 19th January where they studied the engineering of paper and even made their own paper! They all very much enjoyed the session and are looking forward to the next 5 weeks where they will learn about so many different engineering topics. We will update Verulam Voice in a few weeks with more details of their engineering studies.

STEM club Water Challenge

Following Affinity Water’s visit a few weeks ago, our STEM clubbers have been hard at work producing a survey and preparing assemblies on water usage for our year 7 and 8 students. Some of our students have even been taking views of people in St Albans City Centre to help with their work! We look forward to welcoming back Affinity Water and Water Aid representatives in the coming weeks for the next phase of our challenge.

Maths Challenges

60 of our Year 9, 10 and 11 students have been chosen to represent Verulam in this year’s UKMT Intermediate Individual Challenge in early February. The students have been spending their lunchtimes working hard to practice for the challenge. We wish them all the very best with their preparations and with the challenge!

Miss Howells – Inventor extraordinaire!

Miss Howells, science teacher and leader of our science and ECCO clubs at Verulam, received the news this week that two patents that were applied for based on her work in her previous role at Johnson Matthey PLC have been granted! We are all very proud of our inventor science teacher and look forward to hearing more about her inventions in the coming weeks.
