STEM Update

STEM club Water Challenge

Challenge Water 2019 with Affinity Water and Water Aid 2019 has ramped up over the last few weeks. Our STEM clubbers produced and conducted a survey for all year 7 and year 8 students to understand their water usage. The results were then impressively presented by three students to representatives from Affinity Water and Water Aid during a day long session attended by 40 of our students. The day was aimed at helping our students to understand how the STEM subjects that they study in school are used every day by companies that are household names.

The next phase of the challenge will require our students to fundraise on behalf of Water Aid, run a campaign in school to reduce water usage and to design a VIP Latrine for use in countries less fortunate than our own. Our STEM clubbers are full of fantastic ideas and we are enjoying supporting them.

Some photographs and a summary of the day was reported in the Herts Advertiser at the following link.

Year 8 CED with Transport for London

We are very fortunate that representatives from Transport for London have offered to join us next week to work with our year 8s on an engineering project to understand the impact and to design and build scale models of a river crossing in a city. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Please remember to send materials for model bridge building with your son next Wednesday.

We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both our students and the organisers of the masterclasses as to the enthusiasm and ability of our four Verulam ambassadors. I am looking forward to joining them in their final session to watch them receive their awards for their hard work.

Maths Challenges

Earlier this month 57 of our year 9,10 and 11 mathematicians sat the UKMT Intermediate Challenge and we are delighted to report that 29 students received awards and 4 have been invited to take part in the next stage of the challenge next month.
