Election of Parent/Governor

We have a vacancy for a parent governor on the school’s governing body. The board would benefit from a parent specifically with a PR and/or Communications background.

A copy of the letter, together with a nomination form are attached with this newsletter for your information. If you would like to stand for election, please complete and return the attached nomination form to the school office by 1.00pm on Friday 15th March 2019.

Verulam Charitable Trust

We are seeking to recruit a parent who would be willing to audit the accounts of the Verulam Charitable Trust on a pro bono basis. If you are interested in this post please contact Kelly Bonass at [email protected] for more details.

Curriculum Enrichment Day

On Wednesday pupils took a break from their usual routine to undertake the challenges of this term’s Curriculum Enrichment Day. Year 7 enjoyed a busy day of inter-house sport, whilst Year 8 undertook Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths challenges. Year 10 had a challenging schedule of PSHCE lessons which addressed issues ranging from peer pressure and personal responsibility, to issues around suicide. The Lower Sixth began preparation for their higher education and careers Facing the Future conference this summer and accessed our new online careers and higher education planning tool “Unifrog”. This tool allows us to track pupils’ engagement with careers education and planning throughout the school. The Upper Sixth enjoyed the most varied day which focussed on preparing them on being independent whatever their Post 18 plans. Sessions ranged from yoga to student cookery.

Business Enterprise Conference

On Thursday and Friday this week Year 9 abandoned their normal subjects to focus on the skills which will enable them to succeed in life. The activities during the conference aimed to develop work related skills such as problem solving, time management, team work and above all, effective communication. We were delighted to welcome contributors from AECOM, BT, Metrobank, M&S, Barclays, Hertfordshire Business School, HM Magistrates and Tribunal Service and the Army.

Year 11 English GCSE Oral Assessments

I would like to congratulate Year 11 pupils on the success of their English GCSE oral assessments on Wednesday. The preliminary results are outstanding and once again underline how Verulam pupils become excellent communicators.

Headmaster’s commendations

This week’s commendation goes to Oliver Knaggs on successfully qualifying for the Ice Hockey England Team and representing England in an upcoming tournament in Finland. Amazing news, well done.

I would also like to commend Austin Kennedy on successfully reading 1,076,545 words in the Spring Term.
