Key Examination Information

I would be very grateful if all parents could discuss the logistics of public examinations with their son or daughter. It is vital that pupils are absolutely clear when examinations are scheduled, that they arrive in good time and have a contingency plan if their normal travel method is affected. I am a strong believer that the exams timetable should be publicly displayed in the kitchen!

I would also like to draw all parents’ attention to an important notice from the Examination Officer which can be found on the back page of this newsletter. Please note the examination results days given below. If students are unable to collect results in person, they can nominate a responsible person, in writing, to collect on their behalf. The other option is to provide the Examination Officer with a stamped addressed envelope. Parents are unable to collect results unless they are the nominated person.

Senior Football Team Success

Congratulations to the Senior Football team who played their 7th consecutive cup final on Tuesday night. The boys played some superb football and dominated the majority of the game, despite never being in the lead. After an exciting 2-2 draw, Verulam won the match 5-3 on penalties. This was the 7th District Cup Final this year group have won.

Keeping Pupils Safe

As part of our ongoing priority to ensure the welfare of all our pupils, we would like to remind parents of our email address – [email protected] – which parents and pupils can use to notify us of any concerns they may have. This will allow any issue to be addressed and resolved while those speaking to us remain anonymous in the process.

Latin goes from strength to strength

Congratulations to all boys who continue to study Latin with Mrs Bienfait on Tuesdays.

The Verulam Latin Club was initiated over three years ago, and has since progressed from strength to strength. Mrs Bienfait’s first group of boys achieved very highly in their Welsh Board Latin Certificate last summer, and are now working towards the GCSE in summer 2019. They are currently discovering the excitement of chariot racing through the eyes of real Roman authors – a spectacle which evoked great passion in the Roman people.

Thereafter, successful continuity of the Club was achieved for the current years 9 and 10, who study Latin with Dr Harvey in a joint class with STAGS. This year, 12 boys have joined the year 8 Club with Mrs Bienfait. They are demonstrating commitment to learning Latin, fun aspects of Roman life and history, and word connections between Latin, English, and other modern foreign languages. Following in the footsteps of the year 11s, we hope to work towards the Latin Certificate in the future.

If anyone would like to find out more about the Latin Club please contact Mrs Bienfait. [email protected] [email protected]
