Verulam continued to terrorise the opposition until a brilliant ball was played over the defence and Harrison Smith was deadly in front of goal and finished the chance off superbly. Finally after a lot of hard work and battling, Harrison Smith was able to flick a looping header over the keeper and secure the 3-1 victory.

ESFA National Cup

Verulam Year 9 went into the third round of the ESFA National Cup (unbeaten this year) against Lea Manor High. Verulam started the game superbly with a first goal from Harrison Shaw. A left footed volley from just inside the box. A corner superbly whipped in from Thomas Galvez led to an opening for Ben Collison who calmly guided the ball into the bottom right to make it 2-0 Verulam.

A few strong counter attacks from the Lea Manor strikers were confidently defended by Kyrese Williams and Stanley Woodford, solid as normal. With many good passes and quality in the midfield, Elliot Johnson played a great pass in behind the defence to Harrison Shaw. Just knocking it past the keeper led to a tight angled shot from Harrison Shaw who placed it calmly into the left hand side netting. Now controlling the game, Verulam were confident and Charlie McDonald played a quality forward pass into the quick Harrison Shaw. Sprinting past the defender he opened up his body and spotted a right footed shot past the keeper into the corner of the net to seal his hat-trick. A good cross from Uthmaan Khan led to a scrabbling corner box with most of the players. Kai Neal with a great first touch was brought down and a penalty was given. With class, he finessed the ball under the keeper into the bottom right to make it 5-0 leading into the second half.

In the later stages of the match, Paolo Overton, with some great touches found a precision pass into Harrison Shaw. He slipped in Kai Neal who ran in behind the defence. Knocking it past the keeper led to an open net which he passed the ball into that secured his second of the match.

Verulam controlled the game for most of the match but there was time for one more goal. A great shot from Uthmaan Khan was parried by the keeper which led to Vinny Clarke who volleyed the ball with precision into the far corner. A 7-0 win for Verulam sends them into Round 4 of the ESFA nationals. Paolo Overton was awarded Man of the Match. Congratulations to him.
