Autumn Sport 2018

This new academic year has already brought further success and representative recognition for our students. The latest Year 7 in-take competed in the “Mob Race” and continued our excellent record in this term opening event. We would like to extend our congratulations to Matthew Nicholls (7B) who convincingly won the race with a fine display of distance running.

Our football sides have enjoyed many fine wins in recent years and I am pleased to report that our county and national cup campaigns for 2018 are off to pleasing starts with both Years 7 and 9 winning their respective first round ties. Our brand new Year 7 team overcame Rickmansworth School 5-2 in the County Cup and the Year 9 team overran Marlborough School 6-1 in the National Cup. The dominance of our sides has again been reflected in District School selection with a large numbers of pupils successfully selected at the recent trials held at Samuel Ryder School.

Queens School hosted six football matches on Saturday 22nd September and I can report a healthy set of results with many pupils making debuts across the year groups. Our first rugby block fixture is against Beaumont School on Saturday 6th October. The 1st XV recorded a handsome victory in their first outing of the year with a 57-7 triumph against Chesham Grammar School in the National Vase.

This season will see the restructured Hertfordshire Rugby Festivals take shape for Year 9 and Year 13. These one day competitions are designed to cut down on the amount of time the pupils and staff are out of lessons playing sport. We will see if the pupils prefer the experience in the coming weeks.

Our PE department will be hosting two big events in the next two weeks, firstly the District Badminton Tournament for Years 8 to 11. This will involve many pupils from across the district competing to advance to the County Final at Hertfordshire University in December. Secondly, it is our turn to host the fourth round of the annual District Cross Country League at Sandpit Lane. We are very much looking forward to both events.

Finally, the new form sports representatives have already been elected and we are looking forward to them becoming fully involved with boosting the existing House Sport provision at Verulam during the course of this year.
