News from Mr Ramsey

I would like to thank all parents for their support for the changes to our normal programme for Fridays over the last few weeks. This has enabled us to bid farewell to the Upper Sixth, after their seven years in the school in suitable style, enjoy a challenging variety of sporting competition and also to enable all of the Lower Sixth to undergo a searching series of interviews.

I was particularly pleased that many of our interviewers last Friday commented on how well prepared and articulate the Lower Sixth were during the Facing the Future conference. All the Lower Sixth faced academic or vocational interviews from experts in their fields which will be an immense advantage when they apply to university or job apprenticeship next year.

Changes to leadership in September

As part of our School Development Plan, we are changing some aspects of the school’s leadership in September with the adoption of a “Head of School System”. Mr Freakley and Mr Toley will continue to be in charge of the Sixth Form and Upper School/ Year 11 respectively. Mr Dannie has been promoted to Assistant Headteacher and will be in charge of the Middle School consisting of Years 9 and 10. Mr Bullock will be taking charge of the Lower School: Years 7 and 8.

The Heads of School will be particularly responsible for progress and attainment, ensuring that lessons and learning are effective and that punctuality and attendance are good. They will, of course, be working with the Heads of Year.

Meanwhile, Mrs Harrison and I will take responsibility for pastoral aspects of school life and ensuring that behaviour is outstanding. Mr Hall will be overseeing the smooth operation of the school including all our important electronic communications and events.

Lake District Trip

On Friday 7th July, 7BCH embarked on their end of year residential trip to the Lake District. Driving up in a minibus convoy, the boys enjoyed a boat trip across Lake Windermere and were complimented on their excellent behaviour by passers by.

On arrival, the boys were taught how to make their own beds, something they found quite challenging! Later, the rain passed by just in time for the boys to visit the waterfall viewing point behind the hostel to look out over Derwent Water.

For the next 4 days, each group enjoyed a range of outdoor education opportunities at local centres, including orienteering around Whinlatter Forest, climbing Cat Bells, Haystacks and Honister pass, as well as enjoying kayaking, windsurfing and sailing at Nichol End Marina.

In the evening, the boys were tired out with swimming and go karting as well as trying out Ghyll Scrambling.

We had many compliments about the boys’ behaviour and manners from various staff, including being ‘the most well mannered young gentlemen they had ever seen’ from the staff at Keele Service Station. On Tuesday the BCH crew swapped with the JPY half as they eagerly anticipated their adventure.

We cross our fingers that JPY have an equally enjoyable experience and are as lucky with the weather as BCH. For pictures of the trip, please see our facebook page and look out for a video montage on the last day of term. A big thank you to all the staff and Sixth Formers who gave up their time to help with such a wonderfully traditional trip.
