Farewell to Upper Sixth and Welcome to our New Year 7

On Thursday evening we welcomed our new Year 7 parents to Verulam and introduced them to their son’s form tutors for September.  As usual, we will be welcoming the boys to their first taste of Verulam on Saturday morning when they will be getting to know each other and the school.

School closed early on Friday to allow us to host our annual Upper Sixth Leaver’s reception for students and parents.  This year, the weather allowed us to host this event in the staff quad where we were entertained by excellent speeches from the incoming and outgoing Student Leadership Team and the incomparable Mr Skipper who made his last speech as Head of Sixth Form as he is stepping down from this role in the summer.  Our new Head of Sixth Form, Mr Base, will be assisting Mr Skipper with Sixth Form induction next week.

Medieval Festival

With just over a week to go, we can now share the full programme of activities and events (see flyer attached) for our Medieval Festival on 30th June – as featured on Radio Verulam’s breakfast show yesterday morning, when presenter Kerry Cobb interviewed History teacher Mr Pettitt and Verulam “old boy” James Silcox about the day. If you missed it you can listen here:

The Festival is open to the whole St. Albans community so please do help us spread the word and bring your friends, family & neighbours along. All proceeds will be invested in improving Verulam School’s Sport and Recreational facilities.

TICKETS are available for a discount on the gate price from Parentmail Pay until 11am 28th June, or until 9pm on 29th June from https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/verulam-medieval-festival-tickets-61687984422.

Second Hand Uniform Needed

There was a huge demand for second hand uniform from the new Year 7 parents at the welcome evening yesterday.  If you have any good condition, outgrown uniform, particularly games kit, small blazers and ties,  please deliver to reception any time over the next couple of weeks, or to the dining hall on the morning of the next sale on Saturday 6th July.

Headmaster’s Commendations

This week’s commendations go to Leandros Tselentis in Year 7 who scored 100% in his Spanish exam and has been brilliant in the lessons. Also to Dylan West 8P – for being a key member of the Carnegie book shadowing group and reading 6 of the 8 books in as many weeks! Definitely ticking the ‘Enthusiastic learner’ box!  To Harrison Weller for his dedication to his Art and to the Art Department and finally to Lewis Ritchie and Ryan Kennedy for presenting to the Year 6 parents last night.

Nominate your Community Hero

Following our nominations for Herts Advertiser they have asked us to make parents aware of awards that celebrate all of the unsung heroes in our local community.

The people they would like to hear about will not nominate themselves as they do not think that they do anything above and beyond anyone else, but they do and they should be celebrated for the difference they make to others living within their community.

Please help them to recognise all that is good about St Albans, Harpenden and the surrounding areas, please nominate today:

International Year of the Periodic Table Posters

Thank you to all Year 7, 8 and 9 for their contributions to the International Year of the Periodic Table Poster competition.

The quality of posters has been exceptional across all year groups, with a selection being sent off for a chance to win £1000 towards science equipment!

Results from this external competition will be announced from the 1st July.

In the meantime, the remaining posters will be placed around the science department for all to enjoy, and winners for each form will be announced during year assemblies.

The science department has been impressed with the calibre of posters produced from all years.

I will update if we hear anything back about Verulam boys winning!
