News from Mr Ramsey

Welcome back to the summer term

Pupils and staff have enjoyed a very successful start to the summer term which promises to be extremely busy and rewarding.  It is now only a matter of days until pupils in Years 10, 11 and 13 face the challenges of public examinations.  In assemblies this week I advised them to speak to their parents about how you can best support them during this period.

In the week commencing 6th May, I and our examinations officer Mrs Armstrong will be speaking to all pupils about exam rules and etiquette during assemblies.  We will also send these details to parents and would ask that you discuss them with your son or daughter.

Football Success

Congratulations are due to the Year 9 football team who achieved a fantastic 5-2 victory in the County Cup Final against Richard Hale school on Wednesday.  We hope this victory is excellent preparation for their National Cup final against Thomas Telford.  Mr O’Connor will be sending out a letter to all Year 9 parents inviting their sons to travel to West Bromwich Albion’s Hawthorn’s ground to support the team on the 23rd May.  Please ensure you check your parentmail for this letter.

End of Term Celebration Evenings

Mr Skipper and Mr Tromans will also be contacting parents with details of the end of year celebration proms for both the Upper Sixth and Year 11.  The Upper Sixth will be celebrating the end of their studies on 25th June at Hunton Park, whilst Year 11 celebrations are scheduled for 27th June at Batchwood Hall.

Clarence Park

We have been informed by Hertfordshire police of a number of instances of anti-social and criminal behaviour involving groups of young people in Clarence Park.  I would, therefore, advise parents that we do not feel it is safe for their sons to visit Clarence Park unsupervised in the evenings or at weekends at present.

Headmaster’s commendations

This week I would like to commend Oliver Hope for receiving a distinction in his Grade 4 Group Drama Trinity exam.  Also to Lynton Thorpe, Matthew Nicholls, Robert Lynch and Sebastian Jones who came fifth in the Year 7 Maths Challenge final.  An amazing accomplishment, well done boys!

MFL GCSE Speaking Exams

MFL GCSE Speaking Exams are taking place next week (from Monday 29th-Thursday 2nd May)

Students should ensure that they know their time slot (posted on their French/Spanish teacher’s classroom door) and come to Brampton House 5 minutes before their allocated slot.

Students must prepare thoroughly for these exams by practising the Role Play/ Photocards they have been given for their 2 Mock exams and ensuring that they understand, and can confidently answer, all of the questions in their General Conversation Booklets (all 3 Themes).

Santander Trip

Over the Easter holiday some of our Year 10 students went to Santander to stay with their exchange partners who visited St Albans in November 2018.

On the first day we visited Bilbao in the Basque Country, and we went to the Guggenheim museum as well as the city centre.

Over the weekend and each evening, they spent time with their host families and enjoyed a variety of activities such as: visits to different towns, football matches, sea sailing, swimming, bowling and much more.

During rest of the stay we went to Picos de Europa, Potes, Lierganes, and the amazing Parque de la Natualeza de Cabárceno, known to be the one of the largest enclosed natural parks in Spain.

While on the trip, students had the opportunity to go on cable cars, taste different Spanish dishes, speak in the target language and discover three different regions within Spain, something they realised and appreciated!.  They also experienced a few lessons in their host’s school in Santander where classrooms still have chalkboards and individual desks, very different to theirs!

Personally, I’d like to thank our boys for being such great ambassadors for our school and for making me proud! Also, I’d like to say a massive thank you to our families and to Verulam School for their support before and during the trip.

This trip has definitely been a fantastic and unforgettable experience for the students as well as for myself.
