News from Mr Ramsey

Successful trips

I would like to congratulate all the staff and pupils involved in the highly successful trips that took place during half term.

Over 50 boys participated in our annual ski trip which this year went to Zell Am See, Austria. The boys made fantastic progress and were a credit to the school throughout the trip. They were delighted to be blessed with good weather until the last day when a snowstorm struck. This did not curb the enthusiasm of our boys who continued to ski when safe.

Meanwhile, our Sixth Form geographers visited Sweden, Finland and Estonia to study both physical and human geography. Mr Woodville has added a full report overleaf.

House Icons Debate

This year we are introducing a new competition for the spring term. Inspired by the BBC TV Icons series, Years 7-9 will be participating in a House icons balloon debate.

In each form teams of boys will compete to promote their chosen icon as the form’s choice. On the final day of term, this will lead to a house debate in front of the whole year group with each form arguing for their chosen icon. Faculties across the school are supporting this competition by promoting icons from their field or discipline.

Our aim is to promote oracy and to help boys become confident public speakers. I would like to thank Ms Stockman-Black for organising this event. Her debate club is also showing episodes of the BBC Icons series on Wednesdays at 12.45pm in Room 1.

Sporting Success

Congratulations to our Year 9 football team who won the semi-final 5-3 of the National Cup and are now in the final. Well done boys – Mr Giles will be writing a full match view for next week’s Verulam Voice.

Headmaster’s commendations

This week’s first commendation goes to Matthew Nicholls who has been selected to represent Hertfordshire in the Schools’ Year 7 National Cross Country in Loughborough on the 23rd March.

I would also like to commend Jack Brenson and Luke McAndrew for their work supporting the Icons competition.

Exam Information

All students sitting public exams this Summer should have received their official timetables and JCQ Instructions. Timetables can also be viewed on MCAS.

Year 11 Speaking and Listening GCSE Assessment

Year 11 will be undertaking their Speaking and Listening GCSE assessment on Wednesday 6th March. There will be no re-takes, they get one chance to do this and are fully aware of the need to prepare thoroughly. English teachers have told boys when they should arrive for their assessment and where they should go to rehearse before their assessment.

Boys should have prepared a 3 minute speech and converted this to cue cards in preparation for their performance. Boys must attend in school uniform.

The boys have worked hard on their speeches and we wish them well in this exam assessment. If boys are unsure about anything related to this assessment they should speak to their English teacher in the first instance.
