Meeting increase demand

As many parents will know the number of applications for admission to Verulam in Year 7 has increased significantly over the past 8 years. For instance, this year we received 745 for 178 places. There is also considerable pressure for In-Year admissions to other year groups. This increase in demand for places is partly caused by the school’s popularity and also a growth in the school age population of our catchment area which is predicted to continue to grow.

Following discussions with HCC, the governors and I have been considering a number of expansion models over recent years. The governing body decided last week that they would approve an expansion of our Year 7 Admissions from 178 to 186 places from this September onwards.

This modest expansion will meet some increased demand and increase revenue at a time of financial cuts. However, we believe the small increased number will not materially affect the nature or ethos of the school. I do not foresee any need for further expansion and we will continue to operate with our existing six form structure.

Maths challenge

I was very impressed by the success of the Year 10 mathematicians who attended a Further Mathematics Support Programme Maths Feast at Roundwood Park School this week .

Spoken Word in Assemblies

This week’s assemblies led by Mr Sri focused on the Power of the Spoken Word. I was delighted by the contributions of a group of Year 7 boys who gave fantastic performances of poetry, prose and the spoken word in front of older audiences. Their clarity and confidence justified our claim that Verulam helps to produce confident and articulate young men.

Term dates 2017-2018

Parents will find an outlined plan of the term dates for next year attached.

Equipped for learning

I would be grateful if all parents could audit their son’s bags so they are equipped for learning on their return after half term.

Book polishing

This last week has been a book polishing week. I will be looking closely at exercise books after half term. I would be grateful if parents could remind pupils that this task should be completed by their return.

New appointments!

I am delighted to announce the appointment of a number of exceptional staff.
Ms R Muhley as Director of Science. Ms Muhley, who studied Biochemistry at Imperial College, London and has been a Lead Practitioner of Science, will be joining us from Ormiston Academy at Easter. I am also very pleased to appoint Miss L Archer, from Adeyfield School as a Maths Co-ordinator from Whitsun. Mrs J Mitchell, who was previously Head of English at Verulam School, will be re-joining us in September.

Cycling safety

I would appreciate if parents could speak to any son/ daughter who cycles to school as I am concerned at the risks they are taking by:

  • Not wearing helmets
  • Doing ”wheelies” along the road
  • Weaving in and out of traffic
  • Cycling on the pavement
  • Showing disregard for other traffic and users

The boys used their mathematical problem solving skills whilst working under time pressure, and ultimately came fifth overall, winning one of the rounds against schools competing such as St Albans Boys School and Parmiter’s.
