Headmaster’s Commendations

This week I am delighted to award two Headmaster’s Commendations. The first to Ben Brown for his outstanding community service as he volunteers in the canteen both before school and during break and lunch times throughout the year. I would also like to recognise Hana Walker who delivered an outstanding assembly to all year groups last week. Hana presented a powerful message as to why men should be feminists which was accompanied by a video she also created.

Update from the School council

The school council are delighted to announce the launch of a new initiative this term. Feeling Good Week will commence on Monday 19th February, and will focus on encouraging good mental health and positive thinking. The week will feature mindfulness sessions run by an outside trainer, the training of Sixth Form mentors to support lower school pupils and events designed to encourage all students to feel good! The council are considering a wide range of other events including lunchtime fun clubs in the sports hall, physical exercise at the start of lessons, interhouse competitions and a student-designed menu in the canteen.

In addition to Feeling Good Week, the council have discussed arrangements for the annual Mills Match which takes place on Thursday 29th March. This football match between staff and pupils will aim to raise £5,000 for the Oli Mills Foundation. Oli was a student of Verulam who passed away from cancer. He was a fun loving, outgoing, caring and general all round good pupil.

The year group that raises the most money in advance of the event will be rewarded with a non-school uniform day. Pupils are also feeding into the school behaviour review via the school council and have developed ideas for reward trips which they will be discussing with staff in the near future.

Preparing for exam season

Although the summer exam season seems a long way off, preparations are well under way. Mrs Armstrong will be issuing statements of entry to boys via form tutors in Years 10, 11 and 13 before half term. It is vital these are reviewed with care by both parents and pupils to avoid any inaccuracies; particularly that full names are spelt correctly.

This year we are also asking that pupils do not bring in mobile phones on the days of examinations as this

makes entry to the exam hall far quicker and ensures that no infringement of exam regulations can occur. Mrs Armstrong would also like to invite all parents to read the exam information section on the school’s website, which can be found here: information/exam-details/

DfE Performance Tables

The official GCSE and A Level performance tables were published on Thursday. Parents can find our page at:

We are delighted with our students’ GCSE performance in 2017, with the school achieving a Progress 8 Score of +0.24, putting Veralum in the top 15% of boys’ schools nationally. Our A Level Progress score of +0.15 was also recognised as above average.

Update on text messaging system

Verulam now uses text messages to notify parents of their son/daughter’s:

– absence from school (if a parent has not contacted the school absence line) – lateness to school
– requirement to attend a C3 detention after school on the following day.

Texts are sent via the school database and can therefore not be responded to by text. If a parent would like to respond to any text message received, please could they contact the main school number on 01727 766100 where they can be directed to the relevant member of staff with their query.
