New from Mr Ramsey

Happy New Year

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all pupils, parents and staff a happy and successful new year.

New Staff

I am delighted to be able to introduce the following colleagues who have joined our staff:

Miss McInally, a Humanities/History specialist has joined the school as a Head of Year and will initially be taking over as Head of Year 7 when Mrs Nelson departs on maternity leave.

Mrs Inskip, who trained at the school, has returned as a full time member of the English department.

Miss Jones, a Chemistry specialist, has joined the Science Department.

We also continue to develop the pastoral team at the school with the arrival of the highly experienced Ms Moss as Pastoral Support Officer.

An ex-pupil, Mr T Blaxill, returns to join us as a Cover Supervisor and it is also a pleasure to welcome our Alban Federation trainee teachers Dr N Burgess, Chemistry and Mr R Cheale, Physics.

Pastoral developments on four paws!

Our final new member of staff, of the four legged variety, is Bobby, our new School Welfare Dog.

Research has shown that pupils and staff benefit enormously having pets, particularly dogs in school as they support social and emotional needs and development. I was particularly keen to support this initiative from Mrs Southward, our receptionist, who is Bobby’s owner.

Bobby, a Coton De Tulear, is only 10 weeks old and starts Puppy School on Monday 21st January. He will be supervised at all times by a member of staff and will never be alone with students. He was chosen as his breed is hypoallergenic, child friendly and easy to train. In fact, this breed is identified as one of the best for children.

He has had a great week settling into Verulam life. He has already spent time in the Key Stage 3 office and the Sixth Form. He is a hit with staff and students with regular visitors to reception throughout the day. He will play a full and active role in the school, here to support students and staff alike !

Sixth Form Information Evening

I would like to invite all Year 11 parents and pupils to the Sixth Form Information Evening on Tuesday 15th January. The evening starts with an introduction in the hall at 7pm followed by presentations by individual subject leaders.

Mr Dannie, Mr Skipper and myself are also available all evening to discuss individual queries and to provide advice on all post 16 options.

The evening is also open to external candidates. Please feel free to invite any other Year 11 students to come along.

Verulam Charitable Trust

We are seeking to recruit a parent who would be willing to audit the accounts of the Verulam Charitable Trust on a pro bono basis. If you are interested in this post, please contact Kelly Bonass at [email protected] for more details.

This week our STEM club were excited to be joined by some representatives from Affinity Water to start “Challenge Water 2019”. Affinity Water has joined forces with Water Aid to run the challenge.

Our STEM club students, assisted by our 6th form Maths Captains Ben and Josh, spent Wednesday afternoon understanding about water usage in the UK and across the world. We were also inspired to learn how Water Aid is working towards its goal of reaching everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

We all really enjoyed the afternoon and learned so much about water usage, the water cycle and the transportation and usage of water and waste in other parts of he world.

The challenge has begun so the hard work starts now for our STEM clubbers! We cannot publish too much at this stage to avoid giving any of our secrets away to the other Hertfordshire Schools competing!

Thank you once again to Affinity Water and Water Aid for such an interesting, inspiring and engaging afternoon. We are looking forward to the second stage early next month.
