News from Mr Ramsey

Christmas Greetings

I would like to wish all parents, pupils and staff a very happy and peaceful Christmas holiday. Congratulations are also due to Year 11 who completed two weeks of trial examinations this week. I would also like to offer my best wishes to Year 13 pupils who are preparing for their A Level trial examinations in January and to Year 10 who will be preparing for their trial GCSE English Literature exam.

The Upper Sixth have also done sterling work in submitting their university applications this term and a number of them have already experienced the rigours of university interviews. I would like to wish them all well and hope that offers come swiftly next term.

Christmas Quiz

The answers to last week’s Christmas Quiz can be found on the last page of this newsletter. How many did you get correct?

Headmaster’s Commendations

One of my key aims next year is to recognise pupils who show outstanding commitment, or who demonstrate exceptional performance in any subject or activity, both in or outside of school. I have asked all teachers to nominate pupils whenever they see fit; parents are also welcome to let me know of such exceptional performances.

This week, I have presented headmaster’s commendations to the following pupils:

  1. Danny Brodrick who devoted his free time this Monday to clearing the snow from the site of a neighbouring primary school. His dedication allowed the school to open safely the next day.
  2. It was also a pleasure to recognise the success of Alex Culkin who, together with his sister Nathalie, has been selected for the Under 15 England Foil Fencing Squad for the 2018 season. He is currently ranked in the top 3 in England. I would like to wish them both the best of luck in their international competitions.

Nine Lessons and Carols

I would like to thank those who played or sang in last week’s Nine Lessons and Carols concert. The profits from this event and this year’s Abbey Service means we are able to donate £782 to Youth Talk, a St Albans Young People’s Mental Health Charity.

Unbeaten record continues into the New Year

Verulam’s Year 8s look set to retain their remarkable unbeaten run until Christmas, with just one game left this week (weather permitting). They have currently won all 9 games that they have played.

Their fifth round National Cup game saw an away fixture against a strong inner London school, whom they managed to defeat comfortably 5-1. Goals from Tomas Gálvez x2, Harrison Smith x2 and Will Andiyapan were enough to see them through to the next round, however, it was Dan O’Toole’s energy and toughness in the tackle that topped the scorers for a man of the match performance.

They are now in the third round of the County Cup against Turnford School and the 6th round (last 32) in the National cup with an away fixture against a school from Oxford to look forward to after Christmas.
