Engaging Minds Lecture – Ed Suttie

Verulam School St albans HertfordshireEd2NorthPole – a Dad’s expedition to the North Pole

In June 2015 Ed started making plans for a substantial fund raising effort connected to a challenge rmly outside his comfort zone. Digging into his past working for the British Antarctic Survey he found the challenge – an expedition to the North Pole.

Lifestyle changes followed with Ed joining a gym, recruiting a personal trainer and focussing on the task. Through incredible support from his family and friends and the generosity of the business and the community of St Albans city he helped discover a compelling positive story that to date has raised £55,000 for charity. Unlocking communication skills he connected businesses, volunteers, community groups and fundraisers to the charities helping to strengthen the social fabric of the community.

On the last day of March 2016 he said farewell and ew to the frozen North of Svalbard to await transfer to the Arctic sea ice and the expedition. A series of delays and challenges beset the expedition. Once underway temperatures of -40°C, open sea water, ice boulder elds and compression ridges were all tackled.

Ed’s illustrates the expedition, the challenges presented as well as values such as team work, open-mindedness and responsibility. He has witnessed climate change in the high Arctic, and as a former glaciologist these issues are presented technically and coherently connected to our aspirations for a low carbon future.
