Engaging Minds – Ellen Ferris – Teenage Cancer Trust

Verulam School St Albans Hertfordshire

My name is Ellen and I am a Regional Education and Awareness Executive for Teenage Cancer Trust, covering Herts, Beds, London and Essex. I spend my days contacting and visiting schools, presenting to young people aged 13 and above.

Our presentations aim to raise awareness of cancer, while empowering young people to be the experts of their bodies, and take responsibility for their health. Between Sept 2017 and July 2018, I managed to present to over 23,000 young people across over 130 schools, and can now proudly say that every school in the AL postcode have received an ‘Understanding Cancer Together’ presentation from me.

Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK. They need expert treatment and support from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer.’ Teenage Cancer Trust are the only charity dedicated to making this happen. We build specialised wards for young people, train nurses and youth support coordinators, and organise events which help raise funds so that no one has to face cancer alone. For more information on what we do as a charity, please visit www.teenagecancertrust.org.
