Year 10 Geography Field Trip

With the final half term in sight, Year 10 Geographers were straight back into exam focus with a visit to Stratford and the Queen Elisabeth Olympic Park. This was an opportunity for the Year 10s to gain valuable data and fieldwork experience.

Although it was booked to be in the summer term with the hope of eternal sunshine, we were greeted in the morning by persistent rain, which fell all day. The students began the day arriving at the Orbit with a briefing of the day and the focus of the investigation. Sitting in front of the iconic Olympic stadium home to West Ham United, students were asked to consider What is the ‘Arc of Opportunity’ in the area and how the area is being developed?

We visited Hackney Wick and Fish Island to see the striking contrast between the QEOP that has been heavily regenerated and that of Hackney which has been left. The area showed the students excellent evidence of social division and the divide between the rich and poor.  Students collected a range of data at these location before returning towards the Athletes Village, which is now home to local residents. Here they took the opportunity to discuss their fieldwork methods under shelter while they ate their lunch.

In the afternoon the students were given independence to approach members of the public for questionnaires and complete field sketches. The boys where professional in their approach and ambassadors for the school.

They will now present their finding and practice paper 3 exam questions in preparation for the 2020 summer exams. If you wish to see pictures of the event or keep up to date with further geography activities, please follow our twitter @verulamgeogHOD.
